Gentlemen, you may be ruining your style without knowing it

Wearing clothes that don't fit

This is probably the most common mistake men make. All too often, clothes are chosen for comfort or price, with no thought for the cut.

Trousers that are too wide, a shirt hanging loose at the shoulders or a poorly shaped jacket immediately give an impression of carelessness. On the other hand, a well-fitting outfit, however simple, always looks considered and modern.

Cut matters more than the label. A well-tailored basic is always better than a luxury garment worn badly.

Piling on visible logos

It is a common temptation: showing that you wear designer labels to assert your style or status. In reality, it often has the opposite effect.

A T-shirt with an oversized logo, a flashy designer belt or, worse, several brands on show at once often betray a lack of familiarity with the codes of men's elegance.

True style is discreet. The most elegant men don't try to prove they are elegant. They simply are, through their choice of fabrics, cuts and combinations.

Getting colour combinations wrong

Too many different colours kill an outfit. It is a golden rule that many men still ignore. The problem is not daring: it is not knowing how much to dare.

Bright colours, complementary tones and strong contrasts need to be handled with control to avoid lapses of taste. A harmonious outfit often rests on sober, well-matched shades.

Trying too hard to stand out can end up working against your appearance, and even costing you credibility.

Neglecting your shoes

Even the best outfit can be ruined by the wrong pair of shoes. Shoes are a man's signature.

Tired trainers, scuffed Derbies or worn-out loafers always say something about you, and it is not flattering. Conversely, a well-kept pair lifts your whole silhouette.

Shoes are not a detail: they say a great deal about your rigour, your taste and your sense of finish.

Wearing too many accessories, or the wrong ones

Too many accessories kill style. Here are the mistakes to avoid:

  • Wearing more than three accessories at once (bracelets, rings, glasses, watches)
  • Mixing incompatible styles (urban, classic, sportswear)
  • Choosing pieces that are too flashy or of poor quality
  • Overlooking coordination (matching the leather of your belt to that of your shoes, for example)

The key is subtlety. A single well-chosen accessory is often enough to express your personality.

Forgetting the finishing touches

Details make the style. Here are the ones to watch closely:

  • A badly ironed shirt, or one that has come untucked
  • A worn belt, or one that doesn't suit the outfit
  • Visible, unsuitable socks (white socks with a suit, for example)
  • Poorly maintained clothes (bobbles, stains, loose seams)

Taking care of these elements shows that you have mastered the whole picture, not just the surface. Style begins where many people think it ends.
